A compatibility overview of Reliance 4 and Reliance 5 – parallel installation, project conversion, and differences between 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Recommendations for smooth usage.
The Reliance 4 and Reliance 5 systems can be installed and operated simultaneously (on a single computer). Each version is installed into a separate directory. The program settings are isolated, so they do not interfere with each other. Some installation components are shared, such as the License Service. The Reliance 5 system's License Service also supports licenses for Reliance 4. However, the reverse is not true. Therefore, if you want to use both versions simultaneously, install Reliance 4 first, followed by Reliance 5.
A project created in version 4 can be easily opened in the Reliance 5 Design development environment. When the project is opened, it is converted. The main project file extension changes from .rp4 to .rp5, and other project files are irreversibly converted as well. Therefore, we strongly recommend creating a backup of the project before conversion. Converting in the opposite direction (from Reliance 5 to Reliance 4) is not possible.
From a functionality standpoint, full compatibility is preserved after the conversion. The project will behave in the same way in version 5 as it did in version 4.
It is not possible to install both the 32-bit and 64-bit version of Reliance 5 at the same time (e.g., if the 32-bit version is installed, installing the 64-bit version will remove the 32-bit version, and vice versa).
Note:
Some installation components are shared and are always 32-bit. These include: License Service, Reliance OPC Server, and Reliance OPC UA Server.
The project format created in the 32-bit and 64-bit versions is identical. For example, a project can be created in the 32-bit version and then run in the 64-bit version.
