Visualization and control of HVAC system energy consumption at the Marriott Hotel Asia in Istanbul

Marriott International, Inc., is an American-based worldwide operator and franchisor of a broad portfolio of hotels and related lodging facilities. Today, Marriott International has more than 3,700 properties in over 73 countries and territories around the world.

The Marriott Hotel Asia is located in the center of the booming business district of Atasehir and offers a refreshing experience for business and leisure travelers. The hotel has 238 amenity filled guest rooms: 168 deluxe rooms, 51 executive rooms, 18 suites, and 1 presidential suite.

Control system

In 2007, a new HVAC (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning) system was installed at the five-star Marriott Hotel Asia in Istanbul. The proper operation of the HVAC system is provided by Hitachi Shark PLCs. The installation was carried out by Halıcı Elektronik Ltd. Şti., a Turkish systems integrator and distributor of the Reliance SCADA/HMI system.

The new system allows visitors and the hotel staff to control heating and air-conditioning separately in different parts of the hotel. To make it possible, every room has its own remote controller mounted on the wall. The entire hotel premises are controlled this way, from the common hotel area to the hotel rooms.

There is a control PC in the control room. This computer is connected to Ethernet and communicates with the control system. The Reliance Runtime Control runtime software is installed on the control PC to provide visualization and control of HVAC system energy consumption. Using the control PC with Reliance, the operators can control and monitor the current and average energy consumption.

Other features of the Reliance system are the acquisition and logging of data from the operation to a database. The data stored in the database is used as an information source for a follow-up analysis of energy consumption.
