Visualization and control of the HVAC system at the Puerto Rico Pavilion in Seville, Spain

July 15, 2014 | Reliance SCADA

For most of the year, the climate in Seville is hot and humid. It is mandatory to have a good HVAC system in all office buildings and homes. Moreover, there are rules about controlling the climate: It is required that the temperature not exceed 21 °C in winter and not fall below 26 °C in summer, and the relative humidity be between 30 % and 70 %.

In 2013, the EPGA company decided to control the HVAC system of the Puerto Rico Pavilion, which was built for Expo '92 in Seville. The installation consists of 3 floors and an underground parking facility. The system controls seven air-conditioning units, eight exhaust extractors, and a chiller/boiler for the production and distribution of conditioned air.

Thanks to the control system, building users can define the hours of operation, setpoint control, and manual activation of each of the system's elements. It allows them to set the operating mode at every moment and every day of the year. They can also be notified of alarms by email and text messages and graphically display the temperature evolution of each of the air-conditioning units. The analysis of this data ensures the correct operation of the system.

The control system consists of three WAGO BACnet PLCs, which coordinate and control the operation of all existing subsystems.

The establishment of an optimum temperature for each zone of the pavilion is done by using the Reliance SCADA/HMI system, authorized users can access the system 24/7 via a smartphone or Web client.

The system uses SQL Server Express 2012. It allows the user to generate any specific report using any method of data mining or business intelligence.
