Visualization and control of gas flow and consumption at the Ceska rafinerska company

Ceska rafinerska is the largest crude oil processing company and the largest producer of oil products in Czechia. Established in 1995, the company operates refineries in the towns of Litvinov and Kralupy nad Vltavou. Ceska rafinerska is a joint venture of 4 shareholders: the Czech refining-petrochemical holding company Unipetrol and three reputable international companies: ENI, Shell, and ConocoPhillips.

Ceska rafinerska is one of the most significant Czech companies. The company's industrial activities influence the whole of Czechia and it also plays an important role within the Central European region.

The company is the proud holder of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certificates. It has the right to use the titles "Safe Company" and "Responsible Care".

Ceska rafinerska is the largest consumer of natural gas in the North-Bohemian region. Its daily natural gas flow has been set to a certain quantity. Ceska rafinerska would be penalized if its natural gas flow was overdrawn. For this purpose, a new control system for the monitoring of gas flow and consumption was implemented.

Control system

The company's daily natural gas flow and consumption are controlled by the Reliance SCADA/HMI system. If any warning or critical limit is reached, text and email messages are automatically sent to the operating personnel responsible for the control system. In order to allow sufficient time for any necessary cut-down of natural gas consumption, the warning and critical limits can be changed by the operating personnel.

Automatic data acquisition from three ELCOR-94 gas-volume conversion devices is carried out by Reliance Server located in a server room together with GSM modules and a modem. Reliance Runtime Control clients and Reliance J Web clients can connect to Reliance Server. All natural gas consumption data is stored in a database every hour and is available to Reliance Runtime Control clients and Reliance J Web clients. Another feature of the control system is the display of natural gas consumption trends and reports.
