The water works Hrobice was built in 1959. During 1997, the plant was modernized and its capacity was increased. Thanks to the modernization, the cities like Pardubice, Lazne Bohdanec and other in the vicinity, could be supplied with freshwater from this plant. The water works also provides back-up of the freshwater for Hradec Kralove. The finished water is pumped to the water reservoir at Kuneticka mountain and distributed to the customers from the reservoir. The entrepreneur of the water works Hrobice is Vodovody a kanalizace Pardubice, a.s.
Building of the water works
The opinion of the entrepreneur (Vodovody a kanalizace Pardubice, a.s.):
"The water works was equipped with the Sauter WSR3000 PLC devices during the modernization. The PLC devices were bought from a Swiss company. Unfortunately, the supplier has stopped supporting this device type shortly after we launched test running of the water works. So we had Sauter WSR3000 PLC devices that provided only communication in default settings and we were without any support of the supplier of these PLC devices. Our previous SCADA software was running in obsolete MS-DOS, that wasn't user-friendly. So we decided to invite suppliers to tender for the supply of the communication and visualization (SCADA) software. The winner of the tender was the GEOVAP company, which offered a complete solution. The GEOVAP company developed a special communication driver for reliable communication with Sauter WSR3000 PLC devices, that solved the communication problems with these PLCs and implemented the SCADA/HMI system Reliance 3 which provides the control and visualization of the entire water works. Reliance SCADA also provides communication with remote Control Room located in Vodovody a kanalizace Pardubice, a.s. Currently, we are working on WiFi communication between remote water sources and Central Control Room in Vodovody a kanalizace Pardubice, a.s., because this feature is supported by Reliance SCADA."

Description of the implementation:
In 2002, the GEOVAP company was chosen as the supplier of a SCADA-based control system for the water works Hrobice. The previous control system did not meet the requirements for a modern control and visualization system. The water works had been equipped with Sauter WSR3000 PLC devices, so it was neccessary to develop a new communication driver for reliable communication between Reliance SCADA and Sauter WSR3000 PLC devices.
Thanks to the implementation of the new SCADA-based Control System, the communication between the Control Computer and PLC devices is much faster than before. The process of water treatment is controlled by a PC with the Reliance SCADA/HMI system. This computer is placed in the Control Room in the main building of the water works. The water treatment process can be also controlled from the remote Control Room which is located in the headquarters of Vodovody a kanalizace Pardubice, a.s. The data from the process is archived for further analysis or for further processing. The raw water pumping from the distant water resources (flooded sand-pits Oplatil and Ceperka) is monitored by the new Control System as well.
